The enamel layer of each of your teeth is very strong. In rare instances, it is possible for a hard fall or blow to the face to fracture or otherwise damage a tooth. A severely fractured tooth can rarely be repaired by a simple filling. Even if the fracture doesn’t extend deep into the pulp of the tooth, you will still need to talk to Dr. Kathleen Tantuco about having the tooth restored. In some cases, they may recommend having the tooth restored by a crown.
A crown essentially replaces the enamel layer of the tooth with an artificial material like as gold, base metals or porcelain. Restoring a tooth with a crown usually involves two separate appointments.
The first step in the process of Dr. Kathleen Tantuco restoring the severely fractured tooth involves forming an abutment. This is done by removing the majority of the enamel layer. This leaves behind a small amount to protect the interior of the tooth. Later on, this abutment will anchor your new crown.
Dr. Kathleen Tantuco will then make an impression of the abutment, which is given to a dental lab that custom-makes your crown. A temporary crown is cemented over the abutment to protect it while you wait for the dental lab to complete your permanent crown.
We will call you back in for a brief follow-up appointment once the lab has completed your crown. The temporary crown will be removed and your new permanent crown is cemented in place.
If you have a fractured, damaged, or otherwise-compromised tooth, you need to call Dr. Kathleen Tantuco as soon as possible at 404-381-1734 to schedule an appointment.
